What Are the Symptoms?

The symptoms of Alpha 1-antitrypsin are varied depending on which stage of the disease you are in.

Early on you might have symptoms that are very similar to asthma. These symptoms may include:
  • Shortness of breath following mild activity
  • Wheeziness
  • Persistant Cough
As the disease progresses you may develop more severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms may include:
  • Digital clubbing (the ends of your fingers become clubbed)
  • Heart speeds up when you stand up
  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Short of breath all of the time.
If you develop liver complications you might notice that your skin is turning yellow. This is called jaundice.
